Our world is changing rapidly, with millions becoming refugees through conflict, war or climate change. Refugees
are watched on TV screens, on ipads and phone screens, seen fleeing their countries on foot, by boat, or across oceans on flimsy craft.
This clear and simple picture book shows young children that refugees are just like them, but because they were in all sorts of different types of danger, they had to leave the homes and family they loved, to look for somewhere safe to live.
The journeys could be long and dangerous themselves and there is no guarantee they will find a country that will welcome them – but they have no choice. All they want is what we all want – To go to school, make friends, go to work and live in peace with their family.
At the back of the book there are short interviews with young refugees and information about famous refugees throughout history. I particularly liked the illustration style using lots of white background and a simple colour palette to ensure the pictures aren’t too busy for young readers.
I think every junior classroom should have a copy of this book to help understand the problems and challenges refugees face and build empathy for them, instead of possible suspicion or fear.
