27 New Zealanders who have strived and achieved great things in sport, business, science, dance, film, politics, broadcasting, computers,
singing, journalism, comedy, acting and so much more, are asked about their personal journey with reading.
This Reading Tribe may all have achieved great success in their chosen fields, but they are also down to earth authentic kiwis coming from different lives, backgrounds and cultures, sharing their thoughts on their favourite books.
Each are asked a few personal questions, such as:
Did you enjoy reading as a young person?
What is a book you treasured and loved as a child?
What’s a book that has influenced you in life?
What advice would you give a young person who struggles with reading?Â
Many struggled with reading, or found that books were a welcome escape from bullying or a tough upbringing. Many devoured books as soon as they could read on their own. But the common thread is that often books changed their lives – either as a child or as a professional athlete, chef or musician.
Books have helped them through tough times, strengthened their beliefs or shown them a completely different way of looking at life.
For a book nut like me, this book was a wonderful trip back through my own personal journey with books. Many books The Reading Tribe shared as being special to them were also special to me.
The inspirational quotes all taken from books resounded with me too, as I’m sure they will inspire or pique other reader’s interests.
Whether you read The Reading Tribe from cover to cover or begin with the kiwis you know and love, each section is interesting, sometimes thought provoking and ultimately a shout-out to books and reading.
