After the disaster of the mission in Germany, Violet is reeling from her loss and even more suspicious of the staff of The Foundation. She and
another Vortex teen discuss their families who believe they are dead, and the neural blocks they have against contacting them. They have begun to realise they are under even more control than they thought. Subconscious controls are extra layers The Foundation have applied.
Violet is still angry at Phoenix for sacrificing Ethan. She is told Phoenix is in hospital at Alice Springs, but she has evidence against it. When he warns her to leave as soon as she can with the other teens, she takes his fears seriously. He has been through yet another test, and is changed because of it. He can get past the mind blockers The Foundation staff use and has discovered their true plans, without them realising.
When the other teens don’t take his warning seriously Violet finds herself alone with Phoenix after a planned escape goes better than they planned. They are on the run, along the way hurt healed, and something much stronger taking its place. In this time alone they also discover much stronger powers in their leaps from their actual bodies into astral ones. Together they become wolves, one white, one black in their need to survive.
They can hunt like a real wolf as their bodies lay barely breathing where they left them, but they are not invincible. A leap turns to disaster and The Foundation has all the power again. Little did Phoenix and Violet know, even in their escape they followed The Foundation’s well planned mission.
Not all is lost however as someone’s conscience is stronger than The Foundation who employs them.
No.2 in this trilogy, the action continues, this time as the Vortex teens lash out at their captors, using the very skills given to them through The Foundation’s experiments. This episode begins with a debriefing of a key character by the villains, in order to ‘catch up’ the reader.
As in Violet Black (the 1st in the trilogy), Black Wolf is told in two viewpoints – both Violet and Phoenix this time. Watching them hone their skills and leaps into other bodies and even other’s minds was thrilling to read, even with a reveal at the conclusion that was somewhat expected.
Regardless, No.3 Black Spiral is keenly anticipated for March 2022. Who has control? Violet and Phoenix or The Foundation?
