Noah has been on the island for three years. Brought with his twin Tobias, brother Caleb and sister Rachael from their family farm in the middle-of-nowhere New Zealand, they all believed they were finally in paradise.

But that was before they learnt who they truly were, and their individual powers had formed. Noah is smart for a twelve-year-old and incredibly talented with anything mechanical or electrical, but cannot teleport, move things with his mind or ‘talk’ with others inside his head. Every time someone does this around him, he feels left out. Tobias in particular adds to this feeling of being inferior as he flaunts his powers as much as possible in front of his twin.

Anger and resentment has built over these three years, and all Noah can think about is returning to the family farm. He is sick of mangoes, white sand and the clear aqua ocean surrounding them, wanting only the green of New Zealand countryside.

When he’s given the opportunity to go back, he leaps at the opportunity. His travel companion is the leader of the Eridu on Earth – single minded and serious David. With him, their mission to return to space always comes first.

Noah’s reunion with his father is not what he’s hoped for and his short visit to the farm leaves him reeling in shock. His dreams of returning to life as he knew it are torn apart and burnt and David has a plan to keep Noah away from trouble and the island.

Left on a ship full of salvage pirates for months builds Noah’s body, resilience, and resentment. Plans for his future build in his mind as he becomes the ship’s engines expert. Little does he know that all is not what it seems on the ship, and what he discovers about the enemies of the Eridu (the Greys), shocks him to his core.

The future of the human race is suddenly clear in Noah’s mind, and if no-one is going to do something to save it, he will.

This third episode in this thrilling series is told in twelve-year-old twin Noah’s point of view (third person). Noah is angry, resentful and incredibly home-sick for the farm left behind in New Zealand. Unlike his siblings, he has developed no special powers, but his engineering skills are second to none.

Just like part 1 & 2 in the Starlight Series, The First Star held me in the story as Noah’s realisation grows of just how much trouble the human race is really in. As tension rises throughout the story, so did the times I thought, ‘I wasn’t expecting that!’

Noah’s plans for himself seem sound and a way out of the life of a salvage pirate mechanic, but other forces and plans are also at play, undermining everything. The resentment and distrust never leaves Noah throughout the story, but he has no idea how bad things are really going to get.
