Kaitiaki Pipi and her cousin Pou are travelling with their Nana to a family beach get together. They arrive to find many of their whanau having fun on the sand and in the water. Cousins Pipi and Pou quickly join in the games, as Nana is made comfortable by their Aunty Kaia.
Hungry after all their play in the surf, the children return to the kai (food) now set out for everyone. But Nana is looking down the beach. She calls Pipi and Pou to follow, and they do reluctantly as their stomachs grumble. Across rockpools and out of sight of family, the cousins become their supernatural selves after the sea behaves strangely in front of them. But their new forms of mighty tuatara and Pouākai (a giant eagle) aren’t enough this time to save them from danger.
Only a stranger on the beach can help Nana this time, and together they face a remarkable creature with a terrible problem. Can Nana and the old man save the cousins and help solve the perilous state of the bay’s ocean stocks. Overfishing and kai collecting is causing harm.
Another riveting adventure in this pure kiwi series. Packed full of intrigue, danger, action and New Zealand lingo, shape-shifting super-hero cousins Pipi and Pou are instantly likeable. Te Reo Māori is liberal throughout this 3rd episode, but always understandable in the context of the story.
This time it looks like the cousins have met their match and I was worried for their safety, but another powerful force is nearby and at hand to help. Along with the cousins, readers will learn some fascinating facts about the octopus.
A comprehensive glossary of Te Reo Māori is in the rear of the book along with the first chapter of Book 2 in this brilliant series for kiwi kids.
