Axel has an Axolotl. Never heard of an Axolotl? These are creatures that look half fish, half frog, with some lizard thrown in. Axel loves his large white axolotl named Harris Aristotle, caring for him every day.

In fact Harris Aristotle is never cold, never hungry and taken everywhere by Axel. This axolotl is living a great life.

But Harris Aristotle feels like there is something missing in his life. He knows Axel is a great friend, looking after his every need, but Harris Aristotle is secretly dreaming of adventure!

One night when Axel and his family are sound asleep, Harris Aristotle decides to seek his dreams. He sneaks out into the night… But being with Axel during the day compared to being out alone at night is completely different. Harris Aristotle wonders if he’s made a terrible mistake!

Far from home, he finally sees what he’s been looking for and grabs his chance. Will this adventure make Harris Aristotle feel better? Will Axel find his beloved pet?

This new picture book is a beautiful production in full colour hardback, full of action, danger, adventure and wonder. Axolotls are intriguing creatures for some and downright bizarre looking for others. The obvious love between Axel and his pet is sweet and the story solution even more so.

NZ author Juliette MacIver’s rhyme is magnificent and deliciously tongue-twisty. Little Axel’s Axolotl is a joy to read.
