What is The Vampire of Whitby about? The Vampire of Whitby Book Review

Something evil has been released in Whitby. Every time a strange fog rolls across the seaside town, people go missing. Ghosthunters Tom, Eve and Clovis are among others in their secret supernatural society to find out what is going on and go up against an old and powerful vampire.

Tension rises when their friends and loved ones vanish, and they must fight to get them back, and stop a vampire’s ghost from building a vampire army.

Plot summary of The Vampire of Whitby (no spoilers)

Eve, Tom and Clovis are staying with Eve’s Uncle Rufus in the small seaside town of Whitby, while on their summer holidays. They are enjoying their time together until people begin to disappear from the town. The rumours say a large black dog appears along with a thick fog. When the fog is gone, so are Whitby residents.

The young ghost hunters want to help with the mystery but both Uncle Rufus and other experienced members of the SPI say it’s far too dangerous. When he goes missing, the young teens are swept up in the fight to get him back, find another friend called Anwar, and figure out how the evil spirit was released, and how to capture it and put it back where it belongs.

It is dangerous, horrifying and exciting in equal measure, and teens build their own supernatural skills whilst fighting multiple paranormal forces.

Review

The Vampire of Whitby continues the story of young ghosthunters Eve, Tom and Clovis, but readers don’t necessarily have to read previous titles in the series for enjoyment of this creepy novel.

After visiting Whitby myself, I can imagine some of the settings and places. Any fans of the Dracula story will thoroughly enjoy this tale set in present day, over 130 years after the original story by Bram Stoker.

The scenes with the vampire himself are positively creepy and the feelings of the characters raw and real. I’ve enjoyed every episode I’ve read in this series, as the young ghost hunters skills are honed and their courage strengthened.

Characters

Eve – Has an aptitude for witchcraft and loves working with herbs, plants and spells. She is determined, brave and often impetuous which gets her into trouble.

Tom – Developing skills as a psychic. He begins to see visions of his missing friend through his eyes. It’s terrifying for Tom but essential he master the skill.

Clovis – A sensible boy who loves inventing things. He’s also skilled with computers and problem solving with a photographic brain. A quick thinker, Clovis comes to the rescue more than once during the novel.

They live within walking distance of each other at their homes in London. They are new Ghost Hunters in the Society of Paranormal Investigations (SPI).

Anwar – A friend of the children and member of the SPI. He has his own supernatural abilities but is quickly swept up by the villain of the story and held against his will on an island with other victims.

Uncle Rufus – Kind, clever, patient professor and Uncle to Eve. He also an experienced and skilled member of The SPI.

Writing Style

Told from different points of view as the action happens. This allows the reader to know what is going on with different characters, beginning with months before when something evil is released in Whitby and when the story really kicks in and trouble begins happening in in the small seaside town.

Readers see both the heroes and villain’s points of view.
