In true Funny Kid style, Max begins his story looking down at something brown in his friend’s toilet.
No it’s not what you think. But it is wet and uncomfortable when he has to stuff it up his shirt. Along with his friends Hugo, Pip, Tyson and his nemesis Abby Purcell, they are trying to sneak out of a house with five puppies.
Max has the wriggliest puppy, the wettest puppy, and the one that likes to nip! Their escape is far from smooth.
At school that day, their teacher reminds them of their set homework. They had to chose an endangered animal to research and then raise money for it. Abby Purcell is of course, prepared and ready. Max’s input during her speech gets him and Hugo chosen next. Max is the master of improvisation and on the spot comes up with an animal and amazing facts – even though they’re not, quite, true.
So the race is on to raise money for charity. Abby’s idea brings good food, money and mayhem (when Max gets involved behind the scenes). Max’s ideas don’t fly far, even when poor Hugo does most of the work.
But Max cannot stand the thought of Abby beating him in the class challenge. Suddenly he has the idea of all ideas. It’s going to be epic! It’s going to raise money!
It’s also going to be messy, expensive and raise many eyebrows at school and home.
Once again, Max is in trouble going up against oh so perfect Abby Purcell in a challenge. Add a box of adorable puppies, a hose, a home-made ferris wheel and a very angry canteen lady, and Redhill Middle School falls under Funny Kid chaos once again.
Illustrated throughout to add to the laughs, this is the 4th book in this laugh out loud series for middle grade readers.
Funny Kid is also a great series to engage reluctant readers and help emerging readers move onto more text heavy books. Comedy is King in this series, and every episode has made me burst out laughing more than once. Max is hilarious.
