Flick loves her home underneath the beech trees at the end of Holyrood Lane. She dances with butterflies, plays in the autumn leaves and soaks up the sunshine.
But sometimes a storm comes. Flick is frightened of these storms that can rise up quickly and without any warning. These storms aren’t outside, but inside her home.
Flick has learnt the best thing to do until the ‘storm’ blows over, is to hide. Sometimes for hours on end. She is an expert at hiding.
One day a ‘storm’ arrives without warning. Without time to hide. It rages and rages, and Flick flees. It follows, loud and scary.
‘It seethes and snarls, fiercer and faster…’
Flick has had enough! She reaches out for help… and the storm subsides.
Now it might rain outside sometimes, but there are no more ‘storms’ inside.
A sensitive story about the ‘storms’ young children often face under domestic violence. Flick faces fear, flight and confusion as she navigates these ‘storms’ – until one day she decides to be even braver and ask for help.
Sad, clever and gorgeous.
