Artemis Fowl is a very wealthy child genius. He has discovered a world that lives alongside humankind. A world of Fairie, Trolls, Goblins and powerful magic. When he discovers the existence of a book holding all the secrets of this magical world, he is ruthless in obtaining it. This ruthlessness however has a reason behind it, which I discovered along the way.

We meet characters from both worlds. Butler, who is Artemis’ large and powerful body guard, trained in all arts of combat, Juliet (Butler’s little sister), and Artemis’ ailing mother. Butler and Juliet are helping Artemis to capture a fairy (Captain Holly Short) for her riches.

The fairy kingdom want her back – in particular her commanding officer Commander Root. After admitting he is tougher on her than the others because she is a girl, we can see his soft spot – he is determined to save her from the mud people (humans), even if that means going against his own commanding officer.

The battle between Artemis and Commander Root to achieve their objectives is thrilling and well portrayed in this Chapter split Graphic Novel. Artemis may be ruthless and cunning, but he is brilliantly clever and crafts his plans well in advance, covering every eventuality.

An updated version of the original graphic novel, (leaving out the senior reader content), has been much appreciated by fans. After never reading the original series, I grabbed the opportunity to find out what the Artemis Fowl fandom was about. The story is easy to get into and follow, although it is obvious there is much more to be savoured in the original novel.

I’m not saying this felt like there were chunks missing, but could understand there would be so much ‘more’ in the novel. A new (2019) series has been launched with the title The Fowl Twins (Artemis’ younger twin brothers), which throws us back into the world of magical creatures.
