Violet and Johnno (Phoenix) are safe, along with their unborn child. Staying with her parents is safe but problematic as Johnno doesn’t feelBlack Spiral Trilogy (3) Black Spiral Book Review Cover welcome and Violet’s conditioning to hate her parents is still strong. Her father is absent overseas on business, and Violet still faints in the presence of her mother. When a doctor’s visit is suddenly more invasive than it should be, their lives are turned upside down again.

Moving from safe house to safe house they learn of another secret organisation called the Apollo Project – who are people who seek out corruption and entities like The Foundation. They are keen to bring The Foundation down and they shelter Violet and Johnno as they do it. Meeting a double-agent called Alice they learn more about the Apollo Project, and Alice’s undercover job in The Foundation. News of a car bombing suddenly rocks Violet’s world.

Moving from safe house to safe house, they find Ethan’s best friend and fellow game designer Rawiri with a gun-shot wound. Violet uses her special skills, but it takes a toll like never before, but together they name themselves Black Spiral.

With no warning, Violet’s wolf self is ripped from her body, taken far across the world into Foundation territory, leaving Johnno with her body just barely alive. Violet is confused, frightened and then angry at the invasion and Johnno is left reeling but determined to find her.

Between them and double agents within and outside The Foundation they must find a way to get Violet and her unborn child free once more, while The Foundation perform experiment after experiment on them both.

They are up against even tighter security, envious Vortex agents and guards, a desperate director and nearly 18,000 miles between them. Can they reconnect? Can they even fight back? Again, Violet must use the special skills she has learnt by the very people experimenting on her to bring Black Spiral members together and attack. Can they destroy The Foundation once and for all?

The final in this trilogy, Violet and Johnno face their toughest challenge yet. This episode digs even deeper to Violet’s cognitive abilities, experimenting on her shifting skills and even the manipulation of time. This provides much more to concentrate on as The Foundation push Violet’s abilities even further than they have before.  This is a gradual process however, eventually providing ex Vortex members, now named Black Spiral; to fight back.

Johnno’s desperation to find Violet is heart wrenching, and Violet’s courage against the people who have enslaved her once again is inspiring. But her strength is stretched to breaking point, making me wonder more than once if she will even survive. Insightful use of video game’s popularity and the power of social media is a key part of this episode, and also for me the mention of the virus Covid 19 in the past helped ground the story in a possible future for our world.
