Evie is someone special. She not only loves animals, spends all her spare time reading and learning about animals, Evie can talk to animals – with her mind!

The only person who knows she can do this, is her dad. Except he tells her NOT to do it, because something terrible could happen.

Evie has animal friends – Beak the sparrow, Scruff the dog, and after she frees him from a cage; new rabbit friend Kahlo. So far, she’s kept her use of her talent from her dad, but Kahlo belonged to her school principal and she’s not very happy.

Evie’s dad finally explains why she needs to hide her talent. Someone is out there in the world who is looking for people like her.

When others reveal to her that they too have the talent, she begins to strengthen it in secret. This soon proves to be the best decision, as the animals have been giving her a warning. Something bad is coming….

Evie’s skill is pushed to its limits when she is suddenly the only thing standing between her, and someone determined to punish human’s for their disregard and lack of care for Earth and its creatures.

This book begins with my fondest wish as a child – to be able to talk to animals. Emily Gravett’s cover is bright and fun, looking suitable for 8+, but in fact this story would suit readers up to 12+.

Evie begins in primary school but is in high school when she is faced with her ultimate challenge. Mention of climate change, human control and carelessness towards Earth and its inhabitants is a feature, as well as bullying, family, humour and social media.

It goes without saying that animal lovers will enjoy this story. Matt Haig has done it again – Fantastic read.
