Two teens – both in hospital for treatment for their Cystic Fibrosis, and both diagnosed terminal.
Stella has been visiting this hospital since she was six. She sees it as her second home, knows the nursing staff pretty well and is where she met her best friend Poe. Stella is a control freak, thriving off crossing things off her lists – short-term and long-term, and has even built an app that helps people with chronic conditions organise their medication regimes. Despite her illness, she is upbeat and positive, waiting for her ultimate goal of a lung transplant.
Will is even sicker than Stella. No lung transplant will save him, and his rich mum is desperate to find any new drug trial to enter him into for another chance at life. This hospital to hospital, trial to trial, has made Will bitter, and at nearly 18, he is planning to bolt as soon as his life is his own. He wants to travel, and see the world again, this time not from inside a hospital room.
The inevitable meeting and clash occurs between these two personalities, and I nearly put this book down. I’m so glad I didn’t. I was soon caught up in the characters and their internal conflicts. The hospital setting for 99% of the book, was interesting and the teens sweet.
It goes without saying that A Fault in our Stars fans will enjoy this, (and I think the teen dialogue is easier to believe). Enjoyed it.
