Max definitely does not want to dive into the pool in front of his swimming coach, teacher and rest of his class. He does not see the point in swimming at all and launches a speech to all on his views. After gentle coaxing and then ordering, Max still does not dive and suddenly he is pushed! This results in an epically embarrassing, loud and ultimately stinging – bellyflop!
The reason for the swimming (and diving), is the approaching School Swimming Carnival, which Max will do anything to avoid. Abby Purcell (Max’s arch enemy) also seems to have an aversion to swimming (she has a note from her mother), and for the first time Max and Abby have something in common.
Abby suggests they team up to prevent the Swim Carnival altogether.
From origami shark fins, paper mache monsters and a Grammy Award winning perfomance from Max in the school carpark, they throw everything at their quest. Abby seems to be busy somewhere else for most of it… She would rather be at a Maths competition, which to Max sounds even worse.
Their teacher is soon at her wits end as her class of 11 year olds seem to have all gone mad, changed personalities or persist on preventing planned events.
I laughed out loud so many times during this episode of Funny Kid. I have read a few episodes now and found they can be read in any order. They are undoubtedly funny, cleverly plotted and I have enjoyed every one. If you are looking for a laugh, Funny Kid is your guy.
