Max’s day has gone from bad to worse and then the worst it can possibly get!
Opening his back pack in class to discover dozens of pairs of underpants inside is not a good look in front of everyone. With laughter following him out the door, Max escapes yet another prank by his younger brother Liam.
Liam is not only a practiced prankster, but popular in school because of it. Having his little brother show him up like that has Max plotting revenge on his way home. At least he’ll have their flat all to himself when he gets home, so he can concentrate on his favourite video game. For once, everyone else will be out.
But even that is not to be.
Mum, Liam and toddler sister Clio are all in a shouting, crying mess when Max arrives home just in time for Mum to flee out the door and the babysitter to turn up. Not only does the babysitter have a weird name (Miss McBoob), she’s into weird tech, and space stuff, and unfortunately her fashion choices mirror it.
Max is annoyed at Liam again as he makes the most of the situation (as usual) and sneaks off with Miss McBoob’s phone. But Liam has found a strange app, and before long the brothers are fighting again… they wake up in a completely new world.
No. Hang on a minute. It’s still their home. But they are only seven centimetres tall. Their lego blocks are colourful walls around them, their toys bigger than them. Their inquisitive little sister is a giant and Miss McBoob’s cat is a monster! How are they going to get out of this one?
Written with reluctant readers in mind, and with the sibling rivalry of the author’s own sons to model on, Game On: Shrinkle is the first book in a series. Emily Snape wanted to write something to hook readers (especially boys) and keep them turning pages. Game On: Shrinkle is packed full of action, all set within a family home.
Imagine being only seven cm tall where the carpet is as high as your knees, a spider is big enough to eat you and you land in your sleeping babysitter’s open mouth? There is poo, smelly rubbish and a very weird phone app. A cat wants to eat you and your toddler sister thinks you are a toy. Not to mention the fascinating, but sometimes gross facts that Max shares with the reader as he is telling the story.
A more serious thread of a fractured family is part of the tale, but this adventure brings feuding brothers together in their quest to solve riddles, survive challenge after challenge and even save each other’s lives.
Full of action, fun, and freaky too, all in an easy to read font and with illustrations in all ten game levels (chapters).
