Thomas Duncan is so proud of his older brother Jim. He is a soldier training in Egypt with thousands of others, to enable them to join the First World War.

Jim’s letters are full of excitement to become part of the action, and Tom’s letters back send wishes that he was there too. As the war progresses and Jim is in the thick of the fighting, his letters come on pieces of cardboard instead of paper. Supplies are few, especially paper. His letters home are different now, without excitement and with a yearning for home.

Tom tells him of the farm, the lambing and haymaking and how difficult it is with many men at war.

His letter comes back….

An added extra to this luscious picture book is letters that open on the pages and even an envelope where a complete letter slides out independent of the book. Simply beautiful.
