Kupe & The Great Octopus of Muturangi

Long ago, Kupe and his people lived on an island in the middle of Te Moana-nui-a-kiwa (Pacific Ocean). All were happy with plenty to eatKupe & The Great Octopus of Muturangi Book Review Cover from plentiful fish stocks in the surrounding ocean.

One day, to Kupe’s consternation, there were no fish in his nets. Having to sail his waka further and further to find fish for rumbling bellies, Kupa came across a giant monster octopus! Here was the answer to the missing fish supplies.

He tried to catch it, but it was too strong. When he saw the direction it fled in, he knew who he must speak with. But his plea fell on deaf ears, and he knew he must come up with another plan to save his people from hunger.

This large format, hardback book is a feast for the eye on every page as Kupe discovers, hooks, and chases a giant octopus.

The text of the story is wrapped alongside or immersed in the striking illustrations, blending story with Mat Tait’s artwork. (I loved the reader’s first image of what Kupe is up against, deep below his waka).

Kupe the Great Octopus of Muturangi is not only a retelling of this legendary battle between man and sea monster, but a discovery of Aotearoa itself.

Stunning!
