Ever looked forward to something for ages? It’s something super special, especially in your family, andMy Parents Cancelled my Birthday Book Review Cover the time is coming closer and closer….?

This is how Tom feels about his Lucky Birthday. In his family, that means the age you turn on the date of your birthday. Let me explain. Tom’s birthday is on the 11th August, and he is about to turn 11! This is his Lucky birthday – super special!

Except…. His grandma’s dog just died. His dad can’t seem to complete the book he’s been writing forever. Which means Mum has to work super long hours just to pay the bills. Which means, nobody has time to organise a birthday, especially a special lucky birthday. Tom is absolutely gutted.

Tom decides that if he can fix his family woes, he will get them back on track, sorting out the important things in life – like HIS Birthday! At first things seem to go to plan with a little glitter, a tutu and some acting skills from a friend, but he’s soon busted and things slide downhill even further than before. Life is terrible. He will be the laugh of his class. No birthday at all.

So! He decides with some advice from his genius friend Keith (who he wishes he never called genius) that he can put on his own birthday. One even better than the rich kid down the road who had a private chef and fireworks last year.

With some help from a chicken farmer, a pig zebra, a wheelbarrow and his little sister, Tom’s special birthday is the most epic one of all – with some incredible side effects on his family.

Another great read from this funny duo, My Parents Cancelled My Birthday is a trail of disaster beginning with a pig called Tiny, a chihuahua dog and a pizza box. It goes decidedly downhill from there for soon-to-be-11 years old Tom.

It mirrors many lives today though, with busy parents, a lonely grandma and a nearby cafe needing some inspiration.

What I like about these books is the way so many threads of story are cleverly woven together which inevitably turn into a hilarious disaster, or completely the opposite of the main character’s plan, and then because of previous events, things turn out okay in the end.

Clever. Funny. Check them out.
