Morrigan has made it into the Wundrous Society with the help of her patron Captain Jupiter North. SheWundersmith Book Review Cover is thrilled and nervous at the same time. Can she really have the same ‘knack’ as the most evil man alive – Ezra Squall? When she first met him back in her homeland of Jackalfax, he seemed kind and keen for her to be an apprentice. But now she knows what he truly is.

People and creatures are beginning to vanish from Nevermoor. This keeps Jupiter very busy and away from the Hotel Deucalion more than Morrigan likes. After all, she has begun her schooling as part of the Wundrous Society Unit 919 and it’s all gone horribly wrong.

Her Wunsoc school timetable was full of wonderfully interesting subjects until the Scholar Mistress (Principal) got hold of it, deemed it far too dangerous for everyone else and banishes Morrigan to one boring subject every day with an even more boring professor (part human, part turtle), who hates her kind.

Jupiter comes to her rescue and another class is added which teaches about Nevermoor itself, its tricksy lanes and alleyways which can perform all manner of trickery. Its teacher is young, fun and Morrigan’s favourite.

People are still vanishing however and when Morrigan and her Unit members explore a tricksy lane out of bounds, they see something they shouldn’t. This is the first clue to the horror beneath the layers of Nevermoor.

When Unit 919 receives blackmail letters telling them all to do embarrassing or dangerous things or the Unit 919 secret will be revealed, they have no other option. To do otherwise could result in instant expulsion, due to the Wundrous Society rules.

Again, Morrigan is faced with Nevermoor’s evil nemesis, but this time she is braver, stronger and a little more in the know about her strange new world. Can she save herself, her friends and maybe even the missing?

This episode in this fascinating trilogy has not fallen to the often labelled (middle filler), but is just as exciting as the first. Morrigan still has so much to learn, long held prejudices to counter, and also must begin to control this power everyone around her is so fearful of.

Steadfast Jupiter and Hawthorn are my favourites, backing Morrigan up – no-matter-what! We learn more about the city of Nevermoor itself, with layers of evil and darkness lurking underneath, where Morrigan shouldn’t really go. But she’s our heroine, and go she does.

Her desire to be liked still burns deep within her, but she doesn’t seek this lightly. She is loyal and brave and when faced with a terrible betrayal and unimaginable horrors, comes into her own!
