Tomas and his friends, Kat, Kai, Liam and Ted, (dubbed the superhero squad) are now experts with their dragons. The Boy who Dreamed of Dragons Book Review CoverFully grown, they can ride and race their dragons and they don’t need so much looking after. With the perfect hiding place on a little island in the middle of a nature reserve, the dragons can come and go as they please as long as they are careful no one sees them.

Tomas’ dragon taming skills are tested again however when he saves another pod from under the dragon fruit tree. This dragon hatchling is sky blue, and quickly named Zing for the way he zooms everywhere, causing chaos in small spaces. Tomas worries when he can’t work out what Zing likes to eat, and the normal techniques to train Zing aren’t working.

Missing his grown dragon (called Flicker), Tomas takes on caring for Zing who doesn’t seem to want to leave his bedroom, and he is also struggling to grow more dragon fruit trees. Dragon skills Tomas may have, but green fingers he does not.

It’s good to keep busy, because his friends Liam and Ted have been hanging out together a lot, and Kat and Kai have been acting strangely too. Feeling left out, Tomas does something he quickly regrets. How will he tell his friends what he has done? Now all off on separate family holidays, he equally wishes and dreads their return. But it does provide the opportunity to get to know the new kid from school.

In the meantime, Zing causes more havoc, Tomas discovers more clues about where the dragon fruit originally came from, and worries if he will ever see Flicker again? Does Flicker feel left out after seeing Tomas with Zing?

Falling back into Tomas’ adventures with his dragons and superhero squad friends is always so easy with each episode in this fun series. Tomas speaks directly to the reader, drawing you in and making you wonder how you would deal with tiny, secret, fiery dragons.

4th in the series, this episode adds a new character into the squad, and two new dragons to care for, not to mention an intriguing hook at the end. Scorch marked pages and black & white illustrations depict characters, dragons and action across the book. Fun, fiery, mysterious and magical.

Quick Review

No. 4 in this series, Tomas’ self confidence takes a knock. His new baby dragon is a handful and like the others, totally unique in his personality and behaviour. Tomas is worried that his group of friends are changing and he is feeling a little left out. At night, dreams of Flicker are making him miss his dragon friend and they feed a growing fear he might never see him again.

But Grandad is always the voice of reason, and making a surprising new friend helps banish his fears. With the addition of an even bigger dragon fan than the superhero squad, and a particularly unique baby dragon, this episode opens up a whole new storyline. What will happen next?
