Poppy looks up to her big brother. Since losing their parents, Carl has looked after them both. He’s an excellent soccer player too, and PoppyThe Champ Book Review Cover likes nothing more than watching him on the field. She does wish she was a bit more like Carl in sports, but she’s hopeless at any sort.

After watching Carl score the winning goal in a game one afternoon, they return home.

BANG! Smash! Something has crashed through the roof of their house, flinging purple goop everywhere!

Poppy wakes up in hospital, where Carl too lies after being injured. He is much worse off than his little sister though, and Poppy is going to have to look after him for a change. Something else has changed too. Poppy isn’t uncoordinated any more. She’s fast, super fast. She can throw balls, score goals and hit anything with pin-point precision. What has happened to her?

She shows off her new skills at a local competition, entering as The Champ, but Carl wants her to hide her new found super-powers. Poppy can’t help it, and soon puts her new skills to good use against local robberies. But who is the small but powerful villain committing crimes in her town? Like The Champ, this robber has her own set of weird powers.

This is the first episode in a new series by the master of junior chapter book series’ Anh Do. With so many series on the go, (Wolf Girl, Rise of the Mythix, WeirDo, Hot Dog, Ninja Kid, E-Boy, Skydragon), I wonder how he does it!

The Champ is completely different again, revolving around sports and games, with an intriguing villain to be defeated. Illustrations are on nearly every page, the font large and clear and and the chapters short – making The Champ perfect for intermediate or developing readers.

With non-stop action and a fast-paced story, I’m sure The Champ will be just as popular as his other ongoing series’
