Arthur and Rose are twins, and used to be very close. Now they are older, something has changed. No longer in the same classrooms and with different interests, they have grown apart. Arthur misses how his sister used to be, but Rose just finds Arthur to be annoying, loud, embarrassing and tells him so frequently.

Whilst staying at their Grandad’s, he offers his attic space as a den for the twins to design, paint and decorate, but first they must empty the contents of years of junk. Soon they are left with nothing but a fold-up bed and a large rocking horse to move. Many things have reminded Arthur of their adventures in the attic and a place in their imagination called The Land of Roar. The fold-up bed was the entry to this magical land of dragons, humming insects, stars that changed colour, mermaids and unicorns. The twins would climb through the bed and when they climbed out, would be in their imaginations.

When Arthur and Rose have yet another argument, Grandad tries to cheer up Arthur, climbing inside the fold up bed. To Arthur’s horror, he doesn’t come out the other side. Rose refuses to believe Arthur’s panic, so he ventures in alone. Surely The Land of Roar was just a game? But where is Grandad?

A new Narnia for middle grade readers, except this land has been built entirely from the character’s imaginations. Not only are there wonderful, magical creatures, and many adventures to be had, The Land of Roar also holds the twins’ fears of the dark, a creature part man-part crow, leering scarecrows and deep, dark forests.

Now older, Arthur finds a very different land, where the balance of power has shifted from good to bad. Can he rediscover the wonder of Roar in time to save not only Grandad but the entire land and all the creatures within it? Fantastic read!
