Little Red Riding Hood’s mum isn’t worried when her daughter goes hunting for a wolf. After all, no one has seen one for a hundred years.

Red finds it much harder than she thought it would be. It’s not until she’s deep in the forest that she finds a strange looking door. Inside are The Last Wolf, The Last Bear and The Last Lynx. They invite her in for tea and soon tell her about the good old days. Their kindness push aside her thoughts of hunting, but suddenly their eyes are very large as they gaze down upon her…

Red is a thoughtful, resourceful kind of girl and she offers them her lunch. In return they help her find her way home, where she thinks of a plan that just might help her new friends rediscover the good old days.

A wonderful classic with an environmental twist. This could be a great read aloud for young children, where discussion of what animals need to be happy and healthy, and prompt further questions about the world around us.

Rich verbs pepper Red’s journey into the woods, great for young writers to pluck from its pages.
