Thomas and his friends have survived the latest challenges thrown at them by the organisation called WICKED (World in Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Dept). Thinking they are finally safe, Thomas is suddenly put in an isolation cell for weeks. He is fed regularly but has no way to wash himself. He has a toilet and a desk but nothing to do all day. When he is finally released he is relieved to meet his friends again in a large room. Pleased they are still safe he wonders why he was locked up in the first place. Was it just another trial? Another way to test WICKED’s constant variables?

The same man that sent them out into The Scorch appears with armed guards and breaks up their reunions. They are all given the opportunity to get their memories back. Most are keen for this to happen, but since it involves WICKED delving around in their brains again, Thomas, Jorge and Newt are against it. Their rebellion sparks the next phase of this series – fighting back.

Death Cure takes Thomas and his friends from WICKED headquarters to Denver, looking for a man who used to work for WICKED. This man will be able to remove the blocks from their brains. Along the way, one if them is lost to the creeping effects of the world-wide virus The Flare, which they now know was released by governments as a population control after terrible sun flares hit Earth. Now completely out of control, Cranks (infected crazy zombies) are beginning to take over.

Finding a rebel group called The Right Arm, working through nightly dreams and memories for information, learning to trust past foes and keep himself and his friends alive, Thomas faces one struggle after another. WICKED are after him – they have decided that he is the best candidate. They say all they need is some of his brain to finally work out the antidote and cure for The Flare. Should he give in? Will it stop a new round of trials being performed on all the immune people (munies) being rounded up by WICKED? Can he stop this constant evil?

The first book was set in a compound surrounded by a towering-ever changing maze, the second in a desert-like expanse of country, and this one follows the group from WICKED headquarters, to an airship, to Denver, and in and out of safety.

They eventually find themselves back in the maze where it all started – built into the bedrock of WICKED headquarters. With even more heart-pumping action, this last book in the trilogy is violent, gut wrenching, sad but satisfying.

Now I’d like to see all the movies to see how well/or not they did them?
