Mole is fed up with housework one day, and he sets off up his tunnel and outside into the sunshine.  He’s soon into a marvellous adventure with a new friend called Rat. Mole isn’t the bravest creature, but Rat is kind, patient and loves to share the joys of his wonderful river.

Rat has other friends too. Wise, old Mr Badger in the deep, dark, wood and Mr Toad who lives in the grandest house around – Toad Hall. Toad is vain, conceited, impetuous and impulsive, but also generous, friendly and fun to be with.

Toad’s latest fad is his new caravan and horse, and they set off on an adventure together. But as soon as Toad sees a car racing past, he just HAS to own one. And this is where Toad’s downfall begins. Badger, Mole, and Rat do their best to help Toad behave himself, but he’s totally impossible to curb. He HAS to learnt the hard way.

Many more adventures await them all, and once again they have to go to Toad’s rescue. But that’s what friends do.

These animals are personified, giving them human habits and homes in Edwardian England. Written in 1905, they are full of the ceremony, and manners of the time, loving to visit and entertain one another.

Although Toad is rebellious, and despite most of this classic tale being very proper, there is lots going on and many other animals to meet along the way.
