Tuatara have many other names…
Kaitiaki – Guardians of Knowledge
Ngārara or Kārara
A Living Dinosaur or A Living Treasure!
Tuatara may look like a lizard but really, there are incredibly different. Did you know tuatara have three rows of teeth and that no lizard does. Tuatara and their dinosaur relatives once roamed the world, but now only the tuatara remain, and only in Aotearoa.
Tuatara have an extra kind-of eye that senses light through the top of their heads. Female tuatara lay eggs every four or five years and they can live longer than human beings. That’s a lot of eggs!
If you want to know more about this amazing creature that New Zealand is privileged to still have, plunge into the pages of this non-fiction picture book. Follow the life of a tiny tuatara fresh from its leathery egg, right up to when she’s old enough to lay her own.
Jaw dropping facts are sprinkled throughout the story and Ned Barraud’s glorious illustrations will delight any reader.
Tuatara History and Facts are displayed clearly in the back of the book for quick reference.
A book for every kiwi kid. Loved it!
