The little corner shop is being pulled down. Davey Durak passes it every day on his way home from school, and the builder, called Bruce, always waves g’day. One day Davey asks if he can take some of the scrap wood home, and Bruce agrees.

Each day Davey takes home more bits of wood, long, small, thin or wide, and Bruce asks him what he is building? Is it a rocket, a roller coaster, a boat? Maybe a tree hut? But Davey never tells. As the corner shop disappears, it is replaced by thick metal beams and concrete and glass.

Finally, Davey takes Bruce home to show him what he has been building, and Bruce is amazed.

Whatcha Building? is a story of many levels – A mystery, a friendship, new pushing out old, and ideas unfolding. Can all the old materials be used again? What could you make? Many projects could stem from this book, following a recycling or S.T.E.A.M thread in the classroom.

The illustrations can be pored over to discover many things that can be recycled. Look closely though!
