It’s beginning to snow as a young girl waves goodbye to her school friends, as she heads for home. Meanwhile, not far away, a wolf pack is feeling the snow on their backs.
The girl bends her head against the thickening snowfall, her red jacket the only thing that even proves she is there, as a wolf cub is accidentally left behind by it’s pack.
She’s cold. He’s frightened. They find one another in the snow. This young girl has to make a decision. Follow her fear or find her courage in order to get the wolf cub home. Her decision results in a frightening then heartwarming conclusion.
This chance relationship between man and beast (girl and wolf cub), won The 2018 Caldecott Medal for this gorgeous and almost wordless story. Revisiting a little girl in a red jacket at the mercy of a wolf is a welcome journey, now underpinned by a theme of kindness, compassion and understanding.
