Standing alone, he meets Punawai from Honolulu. Puna for short, shows Rangi their ipu heke, used to keep the rhythm and beat to a song. Rangi shows them his poi, explaining what they used to do, and how they use them now.

They meet Kalo from Tonga and Vai from Samoa, who also have taonga from their countries for their performances. The four of them notice a group of other performers laughing at them. Rangi is used to it, proud of his poi skills even though he’s a boy. Puna, Vai and Kalo can relate to Rangi with this too, as they are seen as different in their cultures.

Puna tells them he is Māhū with male and female energy and spirit. Vai is fa’afafine – born a boy with feminine traits being a natural caregiver in their village. Kalo is fakaleitī or leiti and proud of who they are.

‘I don’t know if there’s a Māori word for people like me, but I’m going to find out when I get home,’ said Rangi.

Rangi enjoys the rest of the festival, watching his new friends perform on stage with their cultural groups. On the last day, he enjoys catching up with them all together and hoping that they’ll all meet together another day.

This bilingual (Māori / English) picture book is the sequel to Rere Atu Taku Poi – Let My Poi Fly

Both books follow Rangi who is deemed different by his kapa haka team members because he is the only boy who swings poi. He’s very skilled and despite this difference and his team mocking him, he is proud to perform. He’s pleasantly surprised to meet others like him, who are also seen as different in their villages or islands.

Rere Atu ki Poronihia – Flight to Polynesia introduces three other performers from Samoa, Tonga and Hawai’i who are also transgender or gender fluid – explaining how they are seen in their communities and to themselves.

Each page has Māori first with English below, telling the story of a boy who is proud of his differences, and happy to meet other just like him who love kapa haka and performing as themselves. At the bottom of many pages are translations of special words from Māori to English, which helps all readers build their reo skills.

The illustrations portray each culture in colour and motion and the joy of performing and being part of a cultural festival. My favourite image is the back cover where four new friends from different islands in the Pacific have their arms around each other in a line of belonging.

A beautiful and heartwarming story about diversity and Polynesian cultures.

His forest friends are gathered around him, tummys rumbling and smiles aplenty, at all the good food they can create with the plentiful fruit in the forest.

One thing is spoiling the reading… an annoying fly!

Pete is getting cross, and then his friends are too. What are they going to do?

Then, not one, but hundreds of flies arrive. They only thing for it, is to catch every fly – then all the bugs in the surrounding forest too!

But when they go to make all the delicious fruit recipes they have been reading about, there is no fruit anywhere. No blackberries, plums or sloe berries. Something is very wrong.

When a bluebottle calls from inside her jar that the animals need insects first before fruit can grow (or poo can be cleaned up), Pete realises their terrible mistake.

The cover of Bothered by Bugs grabbed my attention, as I LOVE Emily Gravett books!

Inside is a true treasure in both the gorgeous story and rhyme, and the pages full of lush animal art and antics. Both characters and readers can learn the true importance of insects – no matter how annoying they can be.

Front and back endpapers have fold outs, displaying many insects (found in the UK). In the middle of the book is an entire page of bugs in jars. How many do you know?

But wait! There’s more. The first and last pages of the book have six tasty fruit recipes to try.

Everyone looks different. It seems he is The Only Dinosaur in School. Worried about not fitting in, Theo decides he’s not going to this human school.

Mum has an amazing solution and she works hard all night on it. It is enough to sooth Theo’s worries the next day, so this time he walks through the school gates. No one is looking at him. His worries about not fitting in have all but vanished. But the more confident he gets, and after making a new friend, his secret is finally out.

But wait! The other children aren’t quite what they seem either.

From multi award winning NZ author Leonie Agnew, comes The Only Dinosaur in School. Illustrations by Julia Hegetusch highlight all the fears and worries of the first day of school, fitting in, and finally being able to be yourself.

This delightful picture book shows a child wanting to be the same as his classmates, who in fact are all wanting the same thing. Celebrating differences, first friendships and new experiences are all things that children can discover in this gorgeous story. The surprise that awaits Theo will delight young readers too!

‘Come! Let’s slip down the end of the garden, we’ll beat a new path, where the path doesn’t go.’

Murmurs and muffled sounds are heard between the leaves of the trees and bushes. Behind the leaves are dozens of animals, both big and small, warming up instruments. What is happening here?!

A panda, a rhino, a snake and a crab. A kangaroo, a chameleon, an elephant too. There are drums and horns and strings between paws and tiny feet. This is The Fantabulous Animal Orchestra getting ready to play.

Together they play beautifully and in harmony.

‘Hear that glorious chorus, it’s soaring uproarious.’

But wait… something is suddenly missing!

Where have all the tiny animals gone? But the human conductor hardly misses a wave of his baton.

The orchestra plays on. But wait… more animals have left. What is happening?

Soon only the large animals are playing. Only the large instruments are ‘…soaring uproarious.’

More and more animals and their music vanish, leaving only the oblivious conductor.

The musicians may have left this garden, but maybe we can change that? Maybe we can hear their beautiful music again?

Such a clever concept! I’m a huge fan of Donovan Bixley’s work, and The Fantabulous Animal Orchestra has joined my pile of favourites from this multi award winning NZ author.

From the cover to the surprising fold out pages at the end of the book – this full-colour, large format, vibrant picture book will delight young readers – (and even old ones like me.)

Beginning with an invitation… down the garden path, so to speak, this story will also intrigue readers. Only a page into the story reveals an animal orchestra. Donovan’s rich illustrations invite further scrutiny, as animals of all sizes and shapes are present, surrounding a small human conductor.

All our favourites are here. The tiger, lion and panda. An octopus, snake and kiwi are ready to play. But when an increasing amount of animals stop playing and disappear, leaving only the largest, the ‘fantabulous’ sound of this orchestra is all wrong and out of tune.

The attitude of the human conductor begins with an, I don’t care, until his orchestra cannot play anymore. It is only then he realises what he has lost.

This allegory to climate change and species extinction is executed perfectly, and finished with positivity. The fold-out page at the end of the book was a fun surprise, and reminds us of what we might lose in the orchestra of life on Earth.

Animal lovers, environmentalists, and all kinds of caring wee humans will love this one.

The rooster lets them all know it’s time to get up, and they hop and flutter down to the ground below. But they’re missing something. Where are their eggs?

Off they strut, looking for the eggs that look like them. There are spotty hens, zig zag hens and some with triangles. Some have stars, splotches or squares. Can each mother hen find their own nest?

Slowly but surely as they spread out through the farm, the town market and even into a barn dance, each hen finds their matching eggs. They settle down, leaving the other hen mums to keep on searching. There are nests under trees, in haystacks and window frames. There’s even a nest in someone’s shoe!

Each mother hen finally finds their matching eggs and they can finally relax. But not for long! CRACK!

It’s now time for their eggs to HATCH!

Nine chickens turn to dozens, and they do look like their mums – sort of. Each chick is different – just like people!

This hardback is a bright and very busy book! Beginning with a peaceful scene of a new sunrise and sleeping hens in a tree, a rooster soon launches the hens and reader on their way right into an activity of Hatch and Match.

Each hen must find their own nest of matching eggs, but these pages are a riot of colour and movement. Young readers must pore over each page to help the feathered mums find their nest.

There is so much to look at on every page, as the reader is taken inside, outside, high and low.

A perfect ‘sit on knee’ or ‘lie on floor’ activity for littlies 3+ and a perfect Easter gift!

When their practice is over it is time for the girls to perform with their poi.

The other boys pull faces and muck about while the girls practice, but Rangi is transfixed as their pois fly and their steps and timing is perfect. Calling out in support, he joins their song, but the other boys instantly begin teasing him, saying Poi is for girls!

Rangi feels embarrassed for the rest of the day until he visits his Nan after school. She knows and understands his love of poi and has a pile of kapa haka competitions on video Rangi loves to watch and follow with his own Poi. Now he can swing and enjoy Poi as much as he likes without ridicule.

On the night of the celebration ceremony, a key member of the Poi group can’t go on stage, and uncertainty spreads through the performers. Who will lead them?

Rangi’s best friend Tū blurts out Rangi’s secret. He’s seen Rangi swinging Poi every morning before school. He can lead the Poi.

The Poi group is surprised at this request. The audience is surprised to see Rangi appear on stage in front of the girls. But no one is more surprised than Rangi on how good it feels to perform his true Kapa Haka love – Poi.

He leaves everyone in awe of his amazing skill with the Poi and the longing to perform Poi with the girls has bloomed into something much more.

Ka mutu pea! How wonderful! This bilingual story is gorgeous with te reo appearing first on the pages with English underneath. te reo is used within the English portion too, with these words listed in small print at the bottom of the page. This is a great way for any reader to add more te reo Māori to their knowledge.

Rangi is a gorgeous boy and he yearns to join in with the girls and their Poi. He struggles with the teasing that results, but has support in his grandmother to pursue his love of Poi. When he does finally get his chance to perform with the girls, he not only saves the performance and shines on stage, he shines right off the page as he achieves his dream.

The illustrations add so much to this wonderful story with swoops of colour and Māori design behind the action and characters as they tell the story. A story of diversity, acceptance, inclusivity and being your true self – all wrapped up in a purely New Zealand story that can be read and enjoyed anywhere in the world.

Begin Again is a continuation of Jeffers study of the human condition. Who we are as human beings, and how we can be the best we can – to others and our planet. The first book that began to explore this was Here We Are – written for his first child, his son, Harland. As a first time parent, the world suddenly seemed a different place. Here We Are is introducing humankind and the world to his child who is in effect a blank slate.

Another step in the understanding of the world around us is Meanwhile, Back on Earth – putting our squabbles, and perceptions of own space into perspective.

Begin Again sweeps all of that up, taking us back in human history. Way, waaaaay back. To the discovery of fire. No wait. Even further back to when we emerged from the oceans. We discovered and used fire, found the energy to make tools, build shelter, find food. This becomes ideas, creativity, progress through the ages – all stemming from the simple things in life. Warmth, shelter, food and each other. The creativity became art and story, bringing us together and then being passed on.

Somehow these basic things have become overshadowed. The little things seem to have been superseded with bigger, better, more and how to get even more. Time seems to have sped up. Community, connection and kindness have increasingly become wealth, individuality, and growth at any cost.

Borders are now well established, between towns, counties and countries and ‘us and them‘ exist like never before. But it’s not until a group of astronauts shared what they learnt when looking back at our planet as an object sitting in space, that we could understand something. From space, countries, borders and fences don’t exist. There is land or water. There are no them and theirs. There is only our home – for all of us.

“With distance comes perspective.”

The illustration style we know and love shares these thoughts and questions for our future in a positive, hopeful way. Humans are the masters of adaptation, and we can adapt for our new future – to ensure our future, not only for ourselves or our children, but for their children’s, children’s children’s children and beyond.

This book’s message and reason is clear to all who read it, without any preaching, doom or negativity – in fact, I found it to celebrate humankind in its adaptability and creativity to find solutions. This is further explored in a personal essay by Oliver Jeffers in the rear of the book.

“This book is the culmination of that observation and optimism.”

Let this multi award winning author and artist take you on a journey, and shoot you into any number of possible futures we can all dream up – together.

This pigeon is stern and after one look has decided that Little Pigeon will fit in a little hole.

“No I don’t,” said Little Pigeon.

“I’m going to grow BIG.”

Next Big Pigeon calls Little Pigeon plain, then grumpy, when Little Pigeon complains.

Both pigeons big and small get angrier as Big Pigeon tries to label Little Pigeon.

Then Little Pigeon asks two questions:

Why isn’t Big Pigeon in a hole?

Why does Big Pigeon need holes?

What a brilliantly simple way to talk about labelling or pigeon holing others. Like Little Pigeon we are all multi faceted and no one thing can be used to define us.

We are made to mix with others, and be ourselves at the same time – all while being proud of who we are.

Nikau’s Kui is tucking her in and telling her all about Maui and how clever he was. Kui reminds Nikau to eat all of her lunch to make her brain healthy and strong just like Maui’s was.

Across the street, Aida is helping her grandmother to make injera which her family use with delicious curries and stews. But it’s late and time for bed. Aida’s grandmother promises to put some injera in her lunchbox for tomorrow.

Next door, Fetu doesn’t want to got to bed. Just like Nikau’s grandmother, Fetu’s grandmother has a story for him.

Down the street, Amanda, Rahul and Mei are climbing into bed. Their grandmothers are there for hugs and stories and promises of yummy food for school tomorrow.

All these grandmothers are not only cooking for their grandchildren, they are preparing for a special day of sharing food among The Grandmothers of Pikitea Street.

This picture book is not only bilingual (English/Māori), it shows many different families from multiple cultures, preparing for bedtime.

There are traditional stories, promises of treats in the next day’s lunchboxes and much love from their grandmothers. At the bottom of each page is the translation of grandmother in that home’s culture.

The reader visits Māori, Ethiopian, Samoan, NZ European, Indian and Chinese cultures as children go to bed all the way up Pikitea Street.

Another stand-out feature of this book is Nikki Slade Robinson’s illustrations not outlined in black as traditional drawings are, but white which brings even more light to this beautiful story of inclusivity and sharing in a street of Aotearoa.

School libraries need at least one copy for their shelves!

A young girl begins to play her guitar. Like those who spoke out in the past against injustices, she is looking to make a better world. Beginning small, by tidying up her neighbourhood, she invites another to join her. Music is what attracts them, but it is also the desire to help that brings others to her cause.

She reaches out to those in need, playing music all the way. Some resent her help, but music and an outstretched hand portray her message to the wary. More and more children join in her band of helpers and givers and they spread far and wide, offering connections, and kindness.

Her merry band of children play their music loud and proud, gradually building connections of change all around them. She might have started small, but the change she wants to see and be, can now be heard and seen. She invites the reader to join the change.

Penned by the youngest Inaugural Poet ever, Change Sings is an anthem of Hope, Change, Kindness and Possibility. A young girl reaches out to others, finds solutions for problems and takes action to fix them. It is simple, powerful and every line of Change Sings is full of meaning.

Kindness, Empathy, Courage and Music bring people together to help one another, to make a small change that grows exponentially. Change can be simple, beginning small.

The colour illustrations portraying a young girl’s mission for change show her approach the unsure, the hungry, the frail and the wary. Every page is a double-page spread with the poem below or above them, leaving the illustrations uninterrupted.

Wow!

Bowen Bartholomew Crisp is a thinker. He’s not a fast thinker however, needing time to consider a question and all the possible answers carefully.

When he is five he is asked the colour of the ocean. Bowen thinks about his answer. The ocean is many colours from when it’s clear stretched out across the sand to white tipped waves, green-blue deep water and then down to blacker than black far below.

His teacher has moved onto someone else’s stretched up hand.

When asked his thoughts at seven, his mind fills with a dozen thoughts and wonderings, but again, he doesn’t get to voice them.

Again and again as he grows, Bowen sees, thinks, feels and ponders so much more than those around him. Some dismiss it and some nuture it, allowing Bowen to shine.

His mum is one of these special people, watching and understanding the ways he processes problems and possibilities. She already knows what he will discover when fully grown. His differences will make a difference in the world – providing solutions no-one has even dreamed of.

I loved the way The Incredibly Busy Mind of Bartholomew Crisp is told in first person. We get to know Bowen and how he thinks. He ponders questions given him seriously, but like any child also wonders about the weird and wonderful world around him.

The ocean may be made up of a myriad of colours, but is a zebra black with white stripes, or white with black stripes?

As he grows we see stages of his life and how his way of seeing the world frustrates him or distances him from others. His mum however is watching from the wings, always there for support and understanding when he needs it. This allows Bowen to finally see that being different provides his special place in the world.

Beautifully illustrated in coloured pencil, Bowen’s story is perfect to kick off discussion about differences, empathy, understanding and acceptance of others around you. Gorgeous!

There are many different kinds of beliefs in the world. Some people are Buddhists. Some people have a religion to be guided by. There are Muslims with the religion of Islam. There are Hindus, Christians, Judaism for Jewish people, and Sikhs. There are also Humanists, that don’t have a religion, but believe in many of the same things as religious people do. Such as being kind to others, being a good person and treating others as equals.

Each religion has different ways of prayer, places and ways to worship. There is different clothing, foods, rituals and stories shared among family and community. There are different festivals, holidays and services too.

The one thing that is the same, is that we are all people with families we love, and friends we enjoy – no matter what our beliefs.

This brightly coloured picture book explores many different beliefs and religions, through food, clothing, books we worship from and places to worship in. Showing both children and adults in daily situations and beliefs, the illustrations have explanations and speech bubbles explaining aspects of a selection of religions.

At the rear of the book is a short piece of information on the religions shown throughout the book. An excellent way to begin discussions on differences, diversity, inclusiveness, religion and acceptance of others in junior classrooms or at home.

One day, a strange animal arrived. All he has with him is a suitcase. The other animals stare, but don’t ask his name. They ask what is in the suitcase. The animal tells them what is inside, but the other animals shake their heads. “Impossible,” they think. We don’t trust this stranger.

When given the chance, they discover what is really inside the stranger’s suitcase, and then decide what to do about it.

This simple story with clear but bright illustrations against predominately plain white backgrounds, brought a tear to my eye. Perfect for teaching kindness, responsible actions, empathy and compassion, The Suitcase is a must have at any primary school junior classroom. It would make a great read at home too. Loved it.

The Suitcase was shortlisted for the 2020 Cilip Kate Greenway Medal.

When Grandmother Azar shares the story of Baby Jesus from the Koran, Sarah listens intently as she sits on Grandmother’s knee, telling her her favourite parts.

When Grandmother Maria reads about the birth of Baby Jesus from the Bible, Sarah loves the stars and angels and the three wise men.

But Sarah wonders how two stories can be the same in some ways and different in others?

‘Both are about the mystery of God,’ says Grandmother Azar, ‘So how can we say one is truer than the other?’

Sarah is just glad she doesn’t have to choose, as she is surrounded by all of her family.

A wonderful way to explore different religions and beliefs – with family being the most important component of the story.

In the chaos of war, a family decides to leave to find a safe place to live. A voyage across the ocean is the only option and they set off, leaving everyone and everything they know behind. The ocean is unkind too, and once again they lose everything they have, but thankfully, the family is still together.

Rescue comes and a new life beckons then embraces them.

The steps of a refugee’s life are portrayed in full colour, double-page spreads with one word to explain this stage of the refugee’s journey. Chaos, Escape and Memories begin this story that takes the family through Calm, then Wild, and Threat and more.

This would be a great conversation starter for young readers to pore over the pages and understand what the family is going through at each stage of the journey. What do the faces show? What do you think might happen to the family next?

These questions invoke empathy and compassion for people who we don’t know, but are mirrored in real life every day, around the world.

This wonderful picture book shows young readers how we can all be different and yet, underneath still the same. Several children’s voices introduce themselves, telling the reader they are blind, or deaf, need a wheelchair, have an allergy, or something slightly different. They explain how they live day to day with their difference but are really just like everyone else, then going on to ask their own question of the reader.
